Fix Bad Credit – What You Can Do

You may need to fix bad credit if you wish to apply for a personal or housing loan at a decent interest rate or be approved for a credit card. The following guidelines should help you improve your credit score and increase your chances of getting a loan or credit card.

Start paying your bills on time.

Your credit score can drop by a couple of hundred points if you make late payments on your bills. If you know you are going to have trouble paying your bills or repayments by the due date, you should contact the creditor well before that date and try to come to some kind of arrangement with them that is agreeable to both parties.

Clean up your credit report.

This is something you can easily do for yourself. You can fix bad credit by obtaining a free copy of your credit report and checking it over to see if there are any irregularities on there. By disputing any incorrect information on there, you can improve your credit score dramatically. You just need to contact the credit reporting agency with a letter telling them that the information on there is incorrect. They have 30 days in which to prove otherwise and if they cannot validate the information within the 30 day period the negative information has to be removed off your credit report.

Use credit counselors.

If the thought of doing it yourself overwhelms you, try using credit counselors to help you fix bad credit but do your research first. There are some that charge exorbitant amounts of money for something you can easily do yourself. It is smarter to contact one of the free government credit counseling services that have your best interests at heart and are not out to profit from your situation.
