Tips on How to Stick To a Budget

In order to eliminate debt so you can enjoy some financial peace of mind, you need to start a budget and stick to it. We all start out with good intentions and can usually come up with a budget, but it usually falls by the wayside after a couple of weeks. This article gives you some tips on how to stick to a budget, so you can reap the rewards of financial freedom.

The most important thing to consider when creating your budget is to make it realistic and something you can stick to. In our haste to cut spending and put that money to paying off debt quicker, we may go overboard and make out budget too strict, with no leeway for fun or little treats.

If you make your budget too restrictive, you may stick to it for the first couple of weeks, while you’re still motivated to make the change, but once reality sets in and you have not allowed any funds for fun or recreation or the occasional goodie, you’ll throw in the towel and say it just too hard to stick to a budget.

This would be the prime reason why most people don’t end up sticking it out. They feel their lifestyle is too restricted. So make sure when planning your budget to allow for fun and recreational activities or the occasional treat. Actually set aside a certain amount of money each week just for this purpose.

One of the tips on how to stick to a budget involves setting aside time every week to organise your money and allocate it to its spot in your budget. Boring, I know, but if you will take the time (schedule it into your day if you have to) to work out your money each week and distribute it where it needs to go, then you’re not going to have the spare money sitting around in your purse or access account that you may be tempted to spend.

If there is something you really want as a treat but don’t have enough money set aside in your fun/recreation fund, try to come up with ways you could either get it cheaper or put off buying it until you have enough funds in your fun account. Again, this is very boring, but if you are to ever get the financial freedom you so want, you have to show some self restraint and stick to that budget.

You will feel powerful and proud of yourself for having the self discipline to wait til you have the funds for that item, and know you are well on your way to achieving the financial security you are seeking.

One of the last tips on how to stick to a budget is the following; so you don’t feel too deprived when you choose to stick to your budget instead of blowing it, be sure to treat yourself to something you enjoy that’s either free or economical to do. Come up with your own list of fun and enjoyable things you can do that are cost free and make sure you take the time to do them.
